Cookie policy

What cookies are
Cookies are small files a website saves in your browser. This policy also covers similar technologies that store or read information on your device, such as tracking pixels, tags and local storage. We call them all "cookies" here to keep it simple.
Your choices
When you first visit, a banner asks what you're happy with. Until you choose, no analytics or marketing cookies are set and nothing is sent to Google Analytics or Meta. You can change your mind any time with "Cookie settings" at the bottom of every page. You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings, though the enquiry form may not work if you block essential ones.
What we use
| Cookie or tool | Type | What it does | Set by | How long it lasts |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| js_consent | Essential | Remembers your cookie choices. Kept in your browser's local storage rather than as a cookie | joelstone.co.uk | 6 months |
| _ga | Analytics | Tells visits apart so they can be counted | Google Analytics 4 | 13 months |
| _ga_3Q7PK3D4H2 | Analytics | Keeps track of a single visit | Google Analytics 4 | 13 months |
| _fbp | Marketing | Lets Meta show you Joel's ads after your visit and measure them | Meta | 90 days |
| _fbc | Marketing | Records that you arrived from a Meta ad. Only set if you did | Meta | 90 days |
| Vimeo player | Media | Plays a video only after you press play. We ask the player not to track you. Any cookies it sets belong to Vimeo | Vimeo | Set by Vimeo (see its cookie policy) |
One detail worth knowing: Google's analytics tag is built into every page, because that is how it is installed. Until you switch analytics on, it is told to store nothing and send nothing. Loading the tag file does mean Google can see your IP address and browser type, as it would for any file it serves. Meta's pixel does not load at all until you switch marketing on.

Third parties
Where a cookie is set by another company (marked "Set by" above), that company's own privacy policy also applies to it.
Videos on this site are hosted by Vimeo. Nothing loads from Vimeo until you press play on a video, and the page tells you that first. When you do press play, Vimeo's player loads and Vimeo may set cookies. We ask the player not to track you, but it is Vimeo's service and its policy applies.
